Poetry and Jazz- Douglas Reid Skinner and Christopher Culpo
South African poet and editor, Douglas Reid Skinner, and celebrated American jazz pianist Christopher Culpo present a selection of Douglas’s poems combined with Christopher’s free jazz introductions, interludes, accompaniments, pirouettes and punctuations.
DOUGLAS REID SKINNER has published six collections, most recently Liminal (uHlanga, 2017), and one new & selected poems. He has translated (on his own or with a co-translator) from Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Italian and Portuguese (The Secret Ambition, selected poems of Valerio Magrelli translated from Italian with Marco Fazzini, African Sun Press 2015). He directed The Carrefour Press from 1988 to 1992 and was editor of New Contrast from 1990 to 1992. He is co-editor of Stanzas poetry magazine (Cape Town), a publisher of poetry (Crane River) and is English editor and translator for the AVBOB Poetry Project.
Christopher Culpo is a performer and composer who’s work lies at the confluence of contemporary classical music, jazz, and free improvisation. He has written chamber and symphonic music, vocal and opera, for the dance and the theatre, and has composed and improvised music for silent films. Christopher Culpo has released several albums, most recently The Spectral Life of Things with saxophonist Catherine Sikora. Christopher will collaborate with writer-artist Anne Graaff on a new work at the Bowed Electrons 2019 electro-acoustic music festival at UCT and Wits, August 25 and 28.
