Two Women from East Cape Soil – Leonie Williams and Olwethu Mxoli
Olwethu Mxoli, a teaching intern at Riebeek College, has been working, mentoring and writing with the Helenvale Poets for a few years. She also writes with the Ecca group of poets, and has been published in Nelson Mandela University poetry anthologies. Her poems are well crafted, and reflect on the complexities of being a young woman in the complexities of post-colonial South Africa. Her readings combine the eloquence of good oral delivery, in her guise as spoken-word poet, with the delicacy of the careful writer.
Leonie Williams has been writing with the Helenvale poets since 2011, and has joined the facilitation and mentoring team. Her own poems were published in her collection Broken Living, and her work reflects on a vibrant life lived amongst the dangers of a violent community in Port Elizabeth’s “Northern Areas”. She is witty and compelling.
