Wahnfried

(2)

sponsored by:

Wahnfried is a home in McGregor purchased by Michael and Freddie with the intention of it being used for the benefit of the Village, now and in the future. Our vision is that the house will act as a venue for cultural events – live music, recorded music, films and other ‘sympathetic’ activities which take place in our Village. The Moroccan inspired house with its double volume ‘salon’ and excellent acoustics is furnished with an 1873 Bechstein grand piano, comfortable chairs and a quality film projector system which shows films in high definition and the latest surround sound. Musical events are held most Sundays and films are shown weekly throughout the year.

It is a room about 5.5 X 6.5 in size, attached to the living space of the main house, but with its own private entrance through beautiful barn doors. There are washroom facilities and a place for refreshments. Once again the NGK is the venue for the School’s Festival on the morning of the 25th August. Wagtail Pit

(7)

sponsored by:

On buying the house I had this enormous reservoir in the garden which was too big and so decided to drain it and remove all the reeds. Whilst doing this I realised that a pair of Cape wagtails had built a nest in the reeds and brought up a family of 3. Work was stopped briefly until the birds had fledged and I decided to call it the Wagtail Pit.

However, one lady in the village misheard and called it the Wagpit and the name stuck. The Wagpit it is, but in honour of poetry, it will be referred to as the “Wagtail Pit” during the Poetry in McGregor Festival weekend.

Birdhaven is blessed to have, inter alia, a 100 + years old wild olive tree and abundant water supply from a strong borehole. This has contributed to us creating a lush evergreen tranquil garden, visited by many bird species, hence the name Birdhaven.

The Lion House

(13)

This dorpshuis, built at the turn of the previous century, is the home of Jo Nowicki and Mike Kamstra. Apart from the three stone lions that account for its name, there are lions in the colourful stained glass of the front door.
At the back of the property is a magnificent succulent garden, and an airy art studio where Jo teaches drawing according to her own unique method which, she guarantees, will bring out the artist in anyone. She has been sketching for 35 years and her impressive collection of drawings is housed here – in drawers, display files and sketching journals. www.artroutemcgregor.co.za
